Tips & Tricks

Pathway alumni and faculty recognize that this transition to the Pathway Scholars Program can be daunting. To make the process a little easier, they have provided the following tips related to Doctoring, the Master's Report/Scholarly Project, Organ Systems, and other content you will begin studying during the Introduction to Medical Studies course (July 8-19th).  You will meet each of these faculty members during Introduction to Medical Studies and until then, contact information is below in the event you need to ask a question:

Master's Report (Scholarly Project)

Message from Dr. Kristen Young, Scholarly Projects Advisor (kjyoung12@arizona.edu)

We are looking forward to instructing you in this portion of your Master of Medical Studies program; the Master’s Report – Pathway Scholarly Project (MEDP909) course.

In this course, you will learn about medical research via two processes.  In the fall semester, you will attend course sessions that will discuss the principles of medical research, with assignments related to the content of each session.  Starting in the fall semester and carrying over to the spring semester, you will pair with a mentor to create a research question and develop a plan to answer that question.  You will also meet individually with the course instructor during both semesters to assist you with creation of the research question. Through these activities, students will learn critical inquiry, research design and methods, teamwork, information literacy, communication, lifelong learning and research ethics.

This course culminates in a written research prospectus and oral presentation to a panel prior to completion of the program.

The Pathway Scholarly Project has similarities to the first year of the UACOM-P Year 1-4 Scholarly Project (MED818A); with common goals and objectives.  We encourage students in the MMS program to develop a Pathway Scholarly Project that they can carry with them as they matriculate into the UACOM-P the following academic year.

We encourage you to take a look at the UACOM-P SP Thesis Repository for examples of projects completed by medical students in their fourth year.  As part of the fall semester sessions, you will be required to identify and discuss various projects from the SP Thesis Repository.  As you look through this website, try to identify several potential areas of research which interest you. Although we may not be able to find the same project or mentor, identifying some of your interests now will help us find a suitable project and mentor.

Message from Alex Meraz, MS3, Pathway Alum '21

Congratulations on your acceptance, Class of 2025! Alumni of the Pathway Scholars Program have created a "PSP Mega Resource" folder in Google Drive with you in mind! This folder contains numerous files, study sheets, and presentations that past students have found to be helpful additions to their class material. We will share this folder with you once your NetID and school email are all set up. See you soon!
